dui attorney Ann Arbor

Now more than ever, educated consumers do their internet homework to find the best of everything:
the best restaurants, best hotels, and best salons.  But when someone is arrested for a DUI in Ann Arbor, how do they find the “best” attorney to protect their freedom, their reputation, and their license? Traditionally, people were referred to attorneys by their friends and family or by a trusted professional.  Today, clients use the same internet research skills to find the best DUI Attorney to fit their needs.  Clients might search Google, Avvo, Justia and SuperLawyers, read reviews on social media, and ask their friends and family.

Geherin, a former prosecutor and board-certified criminal trial attorney, is the owner and founder of the Geherin Law Group, PLLC, an Ann Arbor based law firm which exclusively represents individuals in criminal justice matters.  His firm handles hundreds of DUI/OWI cases in and around Ann Arbor every year, and has a long and extensive track record of success. What’s the difference between a driver’s license that’s been suspended vs REVOKED?

drivers license reinstatement ann arbor michigan

There are some major differences! Driver’s license
suspensions usually result from: accumulation of points, unpaid tickets, low-level criminal and driving offenses, and outstanding warrants/defaults. Driver’s license revocations usually result from serious criminal/driving offenses, including repeat drunk driving offenses.

Suspended licenses often have a starting and ending point, and driver’s license reinstatement is often rather easy – wait until eligible, pay a reinstatement fee, and return to the road. Driver’s licenses that have been revoked are much different – there’s no ending point (only an eligibility date), and typically the license reinstatement is very difficult. You must accumulate paperwork, submit it to the Secretary of State, and then you must testify in front of a Hearing Judge to prove you deserve your license back.

Was Your License Suspended or Revoked? Everything You Need to Know Here:

drivers license reinstatement ann arbor michigan

If you’re looking for a
driver’s license reinstatement in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the first question you need to answer is whether your license was suspended or revoked. You may need to take a trip to Secretary of State to order your Master Driving Record just to be sure. If it was suspended, you probably won’t need an attorney to help reinstate it.

If it was revoked, you definitely want to consult with a driver’s license reinstatement specialist to help. You should ask these questions of potential attorneys:

  • “How can you help me with a driver’s license reinstatement?”
  • “Will you look at my Michigan Driving Record free of charge to see if you can help?”
  • “Are you a license reinstatement specialist?”
  • “How many license reinstatements have you won this month, or this year?”

How to Determine How Michigan Attorneys Measure Success

drivers license restoration Michigan

One of the best ways to determine whether an attorney is an authentic, dedicated and specialized license appeals attorney is to ask them about their success rate in handling license reinstatement appeals. These are the hearings that are held before a Secretary of State Hearing Officer at the Administrative Hearings Section following a driver’s revocation of privileges. These hearings are complicated and are often very difficult to win. A specialized license attorney should ideally have a long and verifiable track record of success in winning these hearings.

  1. Go to a Michigan Secretary of State branch and obtain a current Master Driving Record (cost is approximately $8.00).
  2. Contact Dan and his team at MiLicenseLawyer.com, via email or phone (734) 263-2780.
  3. Be ready to openly, honestly and thoroughly discuss your background, criminal history, sobriety (if applicable) and readiness to get back on the road.
